Twenty Years On, Every Learner Still Matters

People often ask me whether I still enjoy what I do after more than twenty years in health and safety training. The truth is, I enjoy it just as much today as I did when I started, but probably for a different reason than most people imagine.
It isn’t the qualifications or the certificates that keep me motivated. Of course, I want every learner to succeed and gain the qualification they’ve worked hard for, but that’s never been the reason I come to work each day. What continues to inspire me is watching people discover something in themselves that perhaps they didn’t recognise before. Seeing someone arrive with uncertainty and leave with confidence is something I never tire of, and after all these years, it’s still the most rewarding part of what we do at BV Associates.
Although I no longer deliver every course myself, I still like to know who’s joining our programmes. I always ask who’s in the classroom, who’s learning online and what has brought them to BV Associates. Every course brings together people with different experiences, ambitions and reasons for being there. Some are taking their first steps into health and safety, while others have years of practical experience and simply want a recognised qualification to support the knowledge they already have. We welcome supervisors, engineers, managers, service leavers and people looking for an entirely new career, each with their own story and aspirations.
One thing I’ve learned over the years is that qualifications don’t create capable people. More often than not, the capability is already there. People have managed teams, solved problems, worked under pressure and made decisions that have protected colleagues and kept businesses operating. A recognised qualification doesn’t create those abilities; it validates them and gives employers confidence in the knowledge and judgement that already exists.
That’s why I’ve always believed that qualifications don’t replace experience—they validate it.
As the course progresses, something fascinating happens. The uncertainty that many learners feel on the first morning gradually begins to disappear. People start contributing to discussions, sharing their own experiences and helping each other see problems from different perspectives. They stop worrying about trying to remember every answer and begin to understand the principles behind good health and safety. More importantly, they begin to recognise the value of the experience they already possess.
That’s the moment I enjoy most.
Not when someone passes an assessment. Not when certificates are presented. The moment someone realises they’re capable of far more than they believed when they first joined us.
At BV Associates, we’ve built a team around that philosophy. Every member of our training team understands that every learner is different, and every learner matters. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to learning because people don’t all arrive with the same experiences, confidence or ambitions. Our responsibility isn’t simply to deliver a course; it’s to create an environment where people feel supported, challenged and encouraged to achieve more than they thought possible.
The greatest reward doesn’t come at the end of a course. It comes weeks, months or sometimes years later when an email arrives telling us that someone has secured a promotion, changed careers, found their first health and safety role or achieved Chartered status. Those messages remind us that what we do extends far beyond a classroom or an online course. We play a small part in helping people change the direction of their careers, and that’s a responsibility I never take for granted.
One learner who immediately comes to mind is David, a service leaver who completed every NEBOSH Certificate qualification with us before securing his first civilian role in health and safety. He continued developing his knowledge, completed his NEBOSH Diploma and eventually achieved Chartered Membership of IOSH. Today, he’s a respected health and safety professional who has progressed within his organisation and continues to build on the foundations he laid when he first walked through our doors. Stories like David’s remind us that qualifications are never the destination—they’re simply the beginning of the journey.
Health and safety continues to evolve. Workplaces change, technology advances and qualifications develop, but people remain at the heart of everything we do. Helping someone grow in confidence, realise their own potential and achieve something they once thought was beyond them is just as rewarding today as it was when I first started teaching more than twenty years ago.
If you’re considering taking your first step into health and safety, don’t underestimate what you already bring with you. Your experience has value. Your judgement has value. Your willingness to learn has value.
