Yes. In my opinion, if you are serious about applying for a health and safety position, a NEBOSH qualification can significantly improve your chances of getting through the recruitment process.
Let me turn the question on its head. If you do not have a recognised health and safety qualification and you are applying for a health and safety role, how far do you realistically expect your CV to get?
You Need to Get Past the CV Filter First
Before you can impress somebody at an interview, you need to get an interview. That sounds obvious, but it is something people often overlook. Many health and safety vacancies ask for a NEBOSH qualification or a recognised level of health and safety knowledge.
If an employer has identified NEBOSH as an essential requirement and you do not have it, there is a real possibility your application will not get past the initial CV filtering stage. The recruiting manager may never see your experience or hear how passionate you are about health and safety. You may never get the opportunity to explain why you would be brilliant in the role because you simply have not met one of the requirements they asked for.
So perhaps the question should not be, “Will NEBOSH guarantee me a health and safety job?” Perhaps the better question is, “Without NEBOSH, will I even get the opportunity to compete for the job?”
NEBOSH Does Not Guarantee You a Job
I need to be honest here. Passing a NEBOSH qualification does not guarantee employment, and no reputable training provider should tell you that it does.
You still need experience, you need to communicate effectively and you need to understand the business you are working in. Most importantly, you need to demonstrate that you can apply your knowledge to real situations.
But a NEBOSH qualification can help remove an immediate barrier when applying for roles where recognised health and safety knowledge is expected. It gets you into the conversation. What you do from there is down to you.
NEBOSH Is Not Just for Health and Safety Jobs
This is where I think people sometimes misunderstand the value of the qualification. Many management and supervisory positions require a degree of health and safety knowledge.
You may not be employed as a Health and Safety Advisor, but you could still be responsible for people and making decisions that affect a workplace or the business. You may be managing contractors, approving work, dealing with incidents, reviewing performance or managing operational risk.
Health and safety is not something that only belongs to the health and safety department. Managers and supervisors make decisions every day that affect people and the organisation. In my opinion, if you carry that level of responsibility, developing a proper understanding of health and safety makes you a stronger manager.
Will NEBOSH Help Me Get a Management Job?
It can certainly strengthen your professional development. If I were looking at two candidates for a management or supervisory position with similar operational experience, and one had taken the time to develop a recognised level of health and safety knowledge, I would see that as a positive.
Why? Because managers need to make decisions, understand risk, challenge people and recognise when something is not right. They also need to understand that the decisions they make can affect employees and the business.
A NEBOSH qualification does not make you a good manager overnight, but the knowledge you develop can help you become a better-informed one.
My Straight Answer
Will NEBOSH help you get a health and safety job? Yes.
If you are applying for a professional health and safety position without a recognised health and safety qualification, you may struggle to get past the CV filtering stage for roles where that qualification is expected.
But I would go further than that. A NEBOSH qualification can also be valuable if you are applying for management or supervisory positions. If your role involves interacting with people, managing risk and making decisions that affect employees or the business, then health and safety knowledge is not simply something nice to have. It is part of being a responsible manager.
So yes, NEBOSH can improve your chances when applying for a health and safety position. But do not make the mistake of thinking that is the only career where the knowledge has value.
