Can I Do NEBOSH With No Health and Safety Experience?

Yes. You can study the NEBOSH National General Certificate without previous health and safety experience. In fact, many of the people I have taught over the years started their NEBOSH journey without ever having held a job with “health and safety” in the title.
Some were managers, while others worked in construction, engineering or logistics. Others were leaving the Armed Forces and trying to work out what their civilian career might look like, and plenty had simply reached a point where they wanted to do something different.
So, if you are thinking about NEBOSH but worrying that everybody else on the course will already be a health and safety expert, let me put your mind at rest. They won’t be.
Do I Need Previous Experience to Study NEBOSH?
No. There are no formal entry requirements for the NEBOSH National General Certificate. That does not mean the qualification requires no effort, because it does. You will need to understand health and safety principles, consider workplace scenarios and explain how those principles apply in practice.
But you do not need to arrive on day one knowing health and safety legislation inside out. That is what you are there to learn.
You May Have More Health and Safety Experience Than You Think
This is something I see regularly. A learner tells me, “Dean, I’ve got no health and safety experience.” Then I start asking questions.
- Have you ever supervised people or carried out a briefing before a task?
- Have you ever stopped a job because something was not right?
- Have you reported defective equipment or investigated an incident?
- Have you followed a safe system of work or managed contractors?
- Have you planned a difficult task or challenged somebody taking an unnecessary risk?
Suddenly, the person who thought they had no experience realises they have been dealing with risk for years. They just did not call it health and safety.
My Advice: Don’t Undersell Your Previous Career
I’ve taught health and safety for more than 20 years, and one of the biggest mistakes I see career changers make is assuming they have to start again from zero. You don’t. You may be changing profession, but you are not deleting everything you have learned during your working life.
Leadership, communication, planning and problem solving all matter. Being able to challenge somebody appropriately matters, and understanding how people actually behave at work matters. Those skills can be extremely valuable in health and safety.
The NEBOSH General Certificate helps you add structured health and safety knowledge to that existing experience.
What If I Haven’t Studied for Years?
This is probably one of the most common concerns I hear. Some learners haven’t been in a classroom for 10, 20 or even 30 years. They worry about remembering information, writing answers and, if we are honest, looking stupid in front of the rest of the group.
My advice is simple: ask the question.
I would rather a learner stop me and say, “Dean, I don’t understand that,” than sit quietly for three days pretending everything makes sense. NEBOSH is not about proving how clever you are. It is about developing your understanding and learning how to apply health and safety principles to realistic workplace situations.
In my experience, the strongest learners are not always the most academic. They are often the people who stay engaged, ask questions and are prepared to think through a problem.
Is NEBOSH Difficult for a Complete Beginner?
It can be challenging, and I am not going to tell you it is an easy qualification because that would not be honest. There is new terminology to understand, legal and management principles to learn, and you need to develop the ability to apply your knowledge rather than simply repeat information from a textbook.
But being a beginner does not mean you cannot succeed. The biggest difference normally comes down to your approach: attend the training, ask questions, complete the work, listen to feedback and do not leave everything until the last minute.
That sounds obvious, but you would be surprised how many people make the qualification far harder than it needs to be by ignoring those basics.
Who Is the NEBOSH General Certificate Suitable For?
The qualification can be relevant to a wide range of people, including:
- People starting a career in health and safety
- Managers and supervisors
- People with health and safety responsibilities at work
- Career changers
- Service leavers moving into civilian employment
- Construction and engineering professionals
- Facilities and operational managers
- Business owners who want a stronger understanding of workplace risk
The important question is not whether you already work in health and safety. The important question is why you want to study the qualification and what you want it to help you do next.
My Straight Answer
If you have no previous health and safety experience, that alone should not stop you studying the NEBOSH National General Certificate. But I would also give you one piece of honest advice: don’t book a NEBOSH course simply because somebody told you it guarantees a health and safety job.
It doesn’t. A qualification can build your knowledge and strengthen your credibility, but you still need to think about your previous experience, the sector you want to work in and how you will start gaining practical exposure.
NEBOSH can be an excellent foundation. What you build on that foundation matters.
