1. Join a professional body

Joining a professional body is an important step for those looking to have a career in health and safety. Not only will it help with your continued professional development (CPD), but it also provides you with good networking opportunities and access to a variety of resources that can help you in your career.

The Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (IOSH) is the largest membership organisation for health and safety professionals in the world and with the NEBOSH General Certificate, you qualify for Associate Membership (AIOSH) and Technical Membership (Tech IOSH)

2. Start your career in health and safety

The NEBOSH General Certificate is often a requirement for employers when recruiting for health and safety roles. Job adverts will usually specify whether it is needed but it is common for the following roles to be open to holders of the NEBOSH General Certificate:

  • Health and Safety Officer
  • Health and Safety Advisor
  • Health and Safety Auditor
  • Health and Safety Co-ordinator
  • Health and Safety Executive
  • Health and Safety Manager
  • SHEQ Advisor
  • Site Supervisor

3. Add another NEBOSH Certificate

You can also choose to build on the foundational knowledge gained from the NEBOSH General Certificate by undertaking another course.

4. Progress to a Diploma

A Diploma is considered the gold standard of health and safety qualifications and is the highest-level qualification on offer. The courses are challenging but the pay-off is worth it with greatly enhanced career prospects and higher earning potential.
